4 New Year’s Resolutions You’ll Actually Accomplish this Year

new year's resolutions

Raise your hand if you made New Year’s Resolutions last year.

Now, keep your hand raised if you actually accomplished them.

Most of our hands will drop at this point—yet 45% of Americans continue to make New Year’s Resolutions year after year. Some of us would argue that it’s pointless to make any resolutions at all, but in reality, resolutions are just goals, and we’re more likely to attain goals when we state them explicitly.

So before you make your list of lofty goals, read on for ways to make those goals doable. Here’s to a Happy New Year filled with realistic resolutions!

#1 Exercise More

Let’s start with a big one! “Exercise more” is a classic resolution. Unfortunately, most of us who buy those gym memberships are overly optimistic about the number of times we’ll actually hit the gym. In fact, 67% of people with gym memberships never actually use them!

Make it Happen: Choose Fun Workouts Only

If you have trouble sticking to a workout routine, you need to make sure it’s addictively fun. Let’s face it—If you don’t love weightlifting at your gym, you’ll probably join the 67%! Check out our post on best ways to stay active during the colder months in Tenleytown, D.C., and you’ll have fun staying in shape all winter long!

#2 Learn Something New

This goal sounds exciting at first, until you wake up one night midway through the year and stub your toe on that forgotten guitar. It’s also a really great resolution to make. As you try new hobbies and acquire new skills, you could potentially discover a new passion that will transform your life, or at least, your leisure time.

Make it Happen: Choose Something You Actually Like

Did you write “learn to code” at the top of your list begrudgingly? Fortunately, you’re not in high school or college anymore, and you have more control over what you get to learn! Try taking music lessons at Tenleytown’s Middle C Music, or take up a hobby you’ve always thought about trying.

#3 Eat Healthier

Many of us make this resolution weekly, but we also live in a D.C. neighborhood with a plethora of great restaurants. Salads get old and smoothies often fail to satisfy. What’s your realistic game plan?

Make it Happen: Cook at Home

We’re talking about small changes, remember? The simple solution to the healthy diet problem is to cook more at home. Research shows people who frequently cook meals at home end up eating healthier. (Hint: when you have a state-of-the-art kitchen with high-quality appliances, it’s more fun.)

#4 Bike More

If your plans to take your bike everywhere aren’t working out, it could be for a couple reasons: it’s not properly set up or maintained for comfort and safety, or you’ve set the bar too high. Plus, biking in winter is just brutal. Especially when winter lasts through late May.

Make it Happen: Wear the Right Gear and Take it Slow

First, make sure your bike is at the right height and all the adjustments have been made to ensure a more comfy ride. Then, wear the right gear (and yes, a helmet is a must).

Now, plan on just taking your bike for errands before you take it out on a full commute for an entire week. There’s a high likelihood you’ll end up sore and discouraged if you go all out! Keep your bike in good condition by storing it inside at Tenley View’s private bike storage area.

So there you have it. This year, you should be better equipped to make realistic, doable resolutions!
