DC Jazz Festival, through June 19
The DC Jazz Festival runs until Sunday, June 19, and it includes daily performances and events at various locations throughout the city. Some events are free; others require purchasing a ticket.Check here for more info.
Red, White and Brew Beer & Wine Festival, June 25
Buy a ticket to this event and get three hours of unlimited beer, wine and cider samples. It’s held at The Yards Parking Lot, across the street from Nationals Park.
Giant National Capital Barbeque Battle, June 25-26
You’ll smell it all the way from Tenleytown as restaurants and chefs from across the country gather on Pennsylvania Avenue between Ninth and 14th streets for this two-day competitive cook-off. The event also features three stages and performances by more than 30 bands.
A portion of proceeds will go to USO to support our troops and to local food banks to help feed those in need.
Smithsonian Folklife Festival, June 29 to July 4, July 7 to July 10
For nearly 50 years, the Smithsonian Institution has attracted people from all around to the National Mall to learn about cultures from across the world during the Folklife Festival. This year will focus on the Basque region of France and Spain and the unique character and culture of those who call it home.
The Smithsonian will also offer Sounds of California, a program offering music workshops and audio stories to highlight the diversity of the state.
Independence Day Fireworks, July 4
Head down to the National Mall on July 4 to watch an elaborate fireworks show set to the backdrop of the Washington Monument.
Truckeroo, July 8, Aug. 19, Sept. 16
This delicious monthly event is held to showcase the many food trucks based in D.C. Come to the Half Street Fairgrounds hungry and ready to eat, play and listen to live music.
Brew at the Zoo, July 21
With a motto like “Drink Beer, Save Wildlife,” how could you go wrong? Gather at the National Zoo — worth a visit in its own right, if you haven’t been — for this beer festival with an ecological twist. Sample beer from more than 70 breweries, with proceeds going to benefit wildlife conservation. Food trucks, lawn games and live music will also be on hand.
Labor Day Concert on the Capitol Lawn, Sept. 4
Finally, mark the end of summer by attending the annual Labor Day Concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol. The National Symphony Orchestra always plays some of the patriotic songs you know by heart.
Tickets aren’t required, but you will have to be screened by security.
